License

How OrkStage is licensed: the AGPL-3.0 core, the Enterprise License for the private Enterprise source, other repositories, contributions and trademarks.

Not legal advice

This page explains the licensing model in plain words. The license texts are what count: read them, and ask your counsel when in doubt.

The core: GNU AGPL-3.0

The platform, the console and the CLI are licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0.

In practice:

  • You can use, study and modify OrkStage and run it on your own infrastructure, including for commercial work and production, at no cost.
  • If you modify OrkStage and let users interact with your modified version over a network, you must offer those users the source code of your modified version under the AGPL.
  • Running an unmodified OrkStage for your own environments does not require you to publish anything.
  • Your templates and the infrastructure OrkStage creates in your accounts belong to you. The license covers the code of OrkStage, not what you deploy with it.

Enterprise features: OrkStage Enterprise License

The Enterprise features are developed in a private repository, orkstage-ee, under the OrkStage Enterprise License 1.0, not the AGPL. The official OrkStage images include them; customers and evaluators get read access to the source on request (hello@orkstage.io). Under that license:

  • You may use and modify them for development and testing, and evaluate them for up to 30 days, without a subscription.
  • Production use requires a subscription. A license key turns on the features you subscribed to.
  • Modified versions stay under the same license. You must not remove or circumvent the license checks.
  • You may not resell or sublicense the Enterprise features, or offer them to third parties as a hosted service.

Without a key, you run the full Community edition: in the official images the Enterprise code is present but inactive, and a build from the public source does not contain it at all.

Contributions

OrkStage accepts contributions under a Contributor License Agreement (CLA). The project is offered under both the AGPL and a commercial license, so it needs the right to relicense contributions. A Developer Certificate of Origin alone does not grant that right. Read the OrkStage CLA: you keep the copyright in your work, and a bot asks you to accept the agreement once, on your first pull request.

Trademarks

"OrkStage" and the OrkStage logo are trademarks of the project. Forks must use a different name and logo. The trademark policy lists what is fine, what needs permission and what is not allowed.
